This ESL emoji lesson plan on World Emoji Day and the history of emojis contains activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials for B1 intermediate students. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the history and evolution of emojis, as well as use different emojis in a variety of different contexts through writing and messaging exercises.
To get the ball rolling in this ESL lesson plan on emojis, you’ll show your students a handful of commonly used emojis and discuss their meanings and what they express. They'll engage in discussion questions and conversation about emojis and make predictions about the history of emojis.
Students then proceed to watch an engaging video about the history of emojis and World Emoji Day. Students do a listening exercise in which they match the dates to the significant events in emoji history, as well as answer some questions about the most used emojis and the reporter’s favorite.
After viewing the video, students explore some more emojis, the emotions they express, as well as get to use them in example sentences. In order to further prepare for the communicative writing tasks at the end of the lesson, they’ll analyze a message a man writes to his friend about his day, and then must properly place some emojis in the context of the message.
In this fun communicative activity, students get the chance to write a message to their classmate/teacher on a variety of different topics using some emojis. Students then respond to the messages. There is then an engaging, optional bonus activity in which students can decipher certain messages using only emojis!
