OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL vocabulary lesson on routines offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for A1 students. In this lesson, students will:

• Talk about common daily and workday routines from morning to night.
• Learn and review useful vocabulary for everyday routine activities.
• Use times, parts of the day, "at," and "in" to describe routines.

WARM-UP ACTIVITY

Students begin this Daily Routine ESL Lesson by looking at Yana's typical workday and matching nine routine activities to the correct photos. The activity reviews clear everyday actions such as getting up, having breakfast, starting work, having lunch, exercising, relaxing, and going to bed.

Next, students sort another set of routine activities into the morning, afternoon, evening, or night. Some activities can fit more than one part of the day. A short bonus task asks students to add one more routine activity to each group.

TARGET LANGUAGE STUDY

The first activity gives students Yana's workday schedule with activities, times, and parts of the day. They write five sentences about her routine and use "at" with clock times and "in" with parts of the day.

After that, students put words in order to build useful routine questions. They then match each completed question to the correct answer. The questions include forms such as "What time do you...?", "Do you...?", and "What do you do...?"

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

Students listen to three short dialogues about different people's routines and complete missing information in a table. The listening task focuses on routine activities and when or what time each person does them.

In the second activity, students choose Student A or Student B and work with a partner. One student asks questions about the other person's routine, while the partner answers from the visual information on the card. They then change roles and continue the exchange.

SHARE YOUR ROUTINE: WHAT TIME DO YOU...?

Students first write six to eight activities from their typical day and add a time or part of the day for each one. This gives them a simple personal routine plan to use in the speaking task.

Next, they write four questions for a classmate or teacher. The prompts guide them to include questions with "What time do you...?", "When do you...?", "Do you...?", and "What do you do...?"

Finally, students work with a partner or teacher, ask their four questions, and answer questions about their own routine.
