Lesson Description

In this ESL lesson plan for adults and teens, students watch an informative video about Ramadan and a basic overview of its story, traditions, practices, and celebration. It includes discussion questions, and conversation and vocabulary activities about Ramadan, religion, and observances. Students then do some listening/viewing comprehension activities based on the video. The viewing follow-up includes a discussion about religions and fasting, an activity featuring adjectives, and an activity on a video quote. There is a 'Religious Observance Task', as well as a quiz & review and lesson reflection included.

Video Description

Islam is the second largest religion in the world – but what exactly is involved in commemorating the holy month of Ramadan? What role did Muhammed play in the beginning of Islam? What is the purpose of observing Ramadan? And what does fasting actually include? This video provides an overview of how the Qur’an came into existence, explains the purpose of observing Ramadan, introduces the role of 'Suhoor' and 'Iftar' in Ramadan, and Eid — the fabulous celebration that marks the end of the month. Also included are a few helpful Arabic phrases to help you celebrate this time of year as a community!
