This ESL lesson plan on food shopping tips contains activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials for B1 intermediate students. By the end of the lesson, students will understand and be able to use some basic grocery shopping vocabulary and give tips on how to save money when grocery shopping.
This lesson on grocery shopping and grocery vocabulary kicks off by having students compare grocery shopping, dining out at a restaurant, and ordering food via a food delivery app. They will explore some advantages and disadvantages for each action. Students continue on to some discussion topics about food shopping and do an activity on some tips/simple strategies that come to mind on how to save money on groceries while food shopping.
Students watch a video of a mom who gives some grocery shopping tips while explaining her rationale behind each tip. Students listen for some key numbers in the video, in addition to some specific information about her tips.
After watching the video, students take part in some discussion questions about the mom’s grocery shopping tips. They then proceed to do a vocabulary activity in which they fill in the gaps using some of the nouns in the video. This is followed by an activity in which students discuss some questions using these nouns.
In this activation, students can either decide to discuss some more provided food shopping tips from experts, or come up with a food shopping plan with a classmate or their teacher. This gives students a chance to come up with some meal plans based on some available digital deals and work on skills for agreeing/disagreeing. Overall, this activity helps students understand the value of discounts and make informed shopping choices.
This lesson plan about shopping and groceries will help your intermediate students improve their communication skills when it comes to shopping for groceries on a budget, saving money, making a shopping list, researching deals, and agreeing on a meal plan.
Grocery shopping vocabulary is a very relatable topic to most students, and with inflation affecting many areas around the globe, this is a timely topic that students can discuss in their own local contexts. It also allows students to develop practical skills in budgeting, meal planning, and making informed purchasing decisions.
