Self-Introduction ESL Lesson Plan Description

OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This ESL lesson plan on self-introductions provides activities, worksheets, and digital materials tailored for beginner A1 students. Through a variety of engaging activities and discussions, students will learn how to introduce themselves, share personal information, and ask questions about others' backgrounds.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

Students will begin by examining a mock social media profile of a fictional character named Matthew. They study the images and write information about his work, hobbies, and city. Then, they imagine Matthew introducing himself to a colleague for the first time, and give an idea as to what he’ll say in this self-introduction. Following this, they will engage in a discussion about the typical information shared during self-introductions.

VIEWING ACTIVITY

Next, students will watch a video featuring a man named Matthew introducing himself. They will complete a few listening comprehension exercises, including choosing the correct words to fill in sentences, and discussing whether the information matches what they wrote based on the social media profile.

DISCUSSION & FOLLOW-UP EXERCISES

Students will discuss what they found interesting about Matthew's introduction and compare it to their own experiences. In the second activity, students use some basic personal introduction phrases to fill in Matthew’s self-introduction, such as: “I’m…”, “I studied…”, “I've worked…”, “I like…” They will then practice constructing sentences using phrases from the video and engage in an activity to put questions in the correct order based on the information provided.

COMMUNICATIVE TASK: PERSONAL INFO & INTRODUCTIONS

In the final part of the lesson, students will choose between two options for a communicative task. Option A involves creating their own social media profile, similar to the one they examined earlier, while Option B focuses on personal introductions. Students can pair up to introduce themselves, ask questions, and engage in conversation using provided vocabulary words.
