This ESL lesson plan on parks and outdoor spaces offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for pre-intermediate A2 students. In this lesson, students will:
Students begin this parks and outdoor spaces ESL lesson by looking at images of people enjoying parks in different seasons. They discuss the season of the year, the activities people are doing, and the objects or things they can see, such as benches, lawns, hills, fountains, games, and views.
Next, students choose a few images from the first part and use a simple prompt to describe them. The activity introduces useful vocabulary for parks and outdoor areas, including words for places and things, as well as adjectives such as beautiful, quiet, huge, relaxing, lively, scenic, enjoyable, and crowded.
The preview ends with a short discussion about parks. Students talk about activities people do in parks, why people like to visit parks, and whether there are parks, green spaces, or nice outdoor areas near them.
Students watch a short video about beautiful parks, gardens, and outdoor places in Paris. The video takes students through famous spots like the Tuileries Gardens and Luxembourg Gardens, as well as quiet or hidden places near the Louvre and in Montmartre. It also gives students a look at how Parisians use parks to relax, escape small apartments, and enjoy city life outdoors.
Before watching the main part of the video, students discuss what comes to mind when they think of Paris. They also talk about whether they have been to Paris, whether they visited any parks there, or whether they would like to go.
Students then watch the introduction of the video and write one reason why parks are important to Parisians. After that, they match five places in Paris to short descriptions. These include the Tuileries Gardens, Luxembourg Gardens, Buttes-Chaumont, Palais Royal, and Montmartre.
In the final viewing task, students watch again and complete missing words about what people can do in these places. They listen for activities such as having a picnic, playing frisbee, walking a dog, laying down on a lawn, playing cards, having lunch, discovering vineyards, and grabbing something to eat at a cafe.
Students first discuss their reactions to the parks and outdoor areas in Paris. They talk about whether they would like to visit any of the parks, whether parks and outdoor areas are popular where they live, and whether they prefer quiet and relaxing outdoor places or lively and active ones.
Students then read three short descriptions of outdoor areas in Taichung, Valdivia, and Sigulda. These descriptions introduce useful vocabulary and phrases for talking about outdoor places, such as pretty, laid-back, take it easy, peaceful, square, stroll around, check out, touristy, trail, and hidden.
After reading, students find words or phrases in the descriptions that have the same or similar meaning as short definitions. This helps them notice how the vocabulary is used in context before they use it themselves.
In the final follow-up activity, students rewrite short sentences in a more natural way using words and phrases from the previous part. They practice describing places such as Times Square, a local park, a hidden garden, Plaza Mayor, and nature paths near a river.
Students choose one or two outdoor places they know and would recommend to visit. These places can include parks, plazas, squares, walking trails, markets, gardens, or other outdoor areas. They prepare their recommendation by thinking about what kind of place it is, what it is like, what people can see there, what people do there, why people like it, and the best time, day, or season to visit.
Then students take turns recommending their outdoor places with a partner or teacher. They use vocabulary from the lesson, ask each other follow-up questions, and share details about parks, plazas, trails, markets, viewpoints, and other outdoor spaces.
As an additional speaking option, students choose from several topics connected to parks and outdoor areas. They discuss lovely parks they recommend checking out, outdoor places where they like to hang out or take it easy, touristy areas, hidden spots, pretty viewpoints, outdoor markets, and places where people stroll around or grab snacks and drinks.
