This ESL lesson plan on package delivery provides activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for pre-intermediate A2-B1 students. In this lesson, students will:
In the first part of this ESL lesson plan on package delivery, students view some images of different products being delivered. Then, they discuss a variety of questions about package delivery.
Students are then asked to come up with verbs that can be used in collocations with the noun “package”. These may be collocations such as:
In the final activity of the preview section, students imagine that a woman is ordering a package. Then, they complete some delivery instructions using some provided vocabulary terms.
In the second part of this ESL lesson on package delivery, students watch a commercial video for FedEx. In the video, a couple is discussing how they would like to arrange the delivery of a package. The woman wants to order a dress, and she discusses with her husband whether they should have it delivered to the front of their house, the side door, or pick it up from the Fedex location.
In the first listening activity, students choose true or false for some statements about their conversation. Then, there is an activity in which students choose the correct word about what they see in the video.
In the final viewing activity, students write the correct words they hear about the “FedEx Delivery Manager”, which is a platform designed to help customers arrange delivery for their order.
After students watch the video, there are a few discussion questions about the video.
The next part of the lesson is focused on one difference between the usage of the modal verbs “can” and “could”. In this lesson, the focus is on using “can” for present ability or permission and using “could” for polite requests. Students read a short dialogue of a man calling a customer about their package delivery. In the dialogue, the delivery driver can’t find the customer’s home and they sort out the situation together. In the dialogue, they use the modal verbs “can” and “could”.
In the following activity, students complete another similar dialogue between a delivery driver and a customer using these two modal verbs.
In this communicative activation, students practice resolving delivery issues through role-play. Each student writes down an item they want to order and their delivery instructions. They then pair up, with one acting as the delivery courier and the other as the customer. The courier calls the customer to resolve a problem with the delivery instructions, using "can" and "could" to discuss solutions. After this role-play, students switch roles and repeat the process. For additional practice, students can discuss questions about common delivery problems and how to address them.
Practical Language Use:
Students learn vocabulary and phrases related to real-life delivery situations. This functional language may improve their ability to handle related to ordering and receiving packages.
Contextual Grammar Practice:
