Movember ESL Lesson Plan Description

OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This Movember ESL lesson plan contains PDF worksheets, activities, and digital materials for upper intermediate B2 students. This is a great lesson choice for the month of November. By the end of the lesson, students will understand what Movember is, its activities, goals, origins, and specific health issues it addresses. They will also be able to promote their own type of social or health movement using a variety of collocations.

This ESL lesson on Movember starts with students describing images showing men with different styles of facial hair. Then, students match some nouns to some phrases related to movements and Movember. In the last part, students predict or describe what Movember is using some phrases. Some of these phrases include:

  • to grow a moustache
  • to spark a movement
  • to raise awareness
  • to host an event
  • to challenge oneself

VIDEO & LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Students watch a video that serves as a promotion of the Movember movement, highlighting its goals, activities, origin, global presence, and focus on men's health issues. It encourages people to participate and make a positive impact on these important health challenges.

In the listening comprehension sections, students list the topics in order they are discussed in the video. Then, they answers some questions about Movember and the information they hear in the video.

DISCUSSION & COLLOCATIONS

After watching the video, there are some discussion questions about students' thoughts on the video and Movember. The second part features some verb + noun collocations from the video. They try to name more nouns that collocate with these verbs. These verbs include:

to host / to challenge / to raise / to spark

Students use these verbs to complete some sentences about Movember and other types of movements. The aim is for students to identify which verbs collocate with the nouns in the sentences.
