OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This Christmas activities ESL lesson plan contains activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials for A2 - B1 pre-intermediate students. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe a variety of Christmas-related activities and talk about Christmas using definite articles (the), indefinite articles (a / an) and no article. They’ll also be able to plan some activities at a Christmas party and invite someone to it.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

This Christmas activities ESL lesson plan starts by students having a conversation about Christmas, depending on whether or not they celebrate it. They’ll then match some words to some images of Christmas-related vocabulary. Students then have to talk about how these terms may be related to Christmas.

VIDEO & LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Students watch a lively music video by Elton John and Ed Sheeran. In the video, Ed and Elton do a variety of Christmas activities. In the listening activity for the video, students have to list the activities in the order they do them. Then there is a second part that focuses on the lyrics of the song. Students listen to the first half of the song and choose the correct lyrics they hear.

DISCUSSION & GRAMMAR

After watching the video, students discuss their thoughts about the video and Christmas or holiday songs. Then, there is an activity that features definite and indefinite articles (the, a / an, and no article) in the context of general and specific nouns, and uncountable and countable nouns. Some of the sentences featured are as follows:

  • Ed is flying with a snowman.
  • The snowman is happy and smiling.
  • Ed is drinking wine.
  • Kids are throwing snowballs.
  • Ed and Elton are playing music.

Students then do an activity in a dialogue in which they must write the correct article (the, a(n), or no article) based on the context. In the dialogue, a person invites a friend to a Christmas party, which is designed to prepare students for the communicative activation as described below:

CHRISTMAS PARTY PLANNING & INVITE!
