This ESL July 4th lesson plan and American Independence Day contains activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials for B2 intermediate students. By the end of the lesson, students will understand and be able to discuss the importance and traditions of July 4th, as well as apply knowledge of passive and active voice. Students will be able to use the active and passive voice when describing other independence days around the world and the traditions associated with them.
This ESL July 4th Lesson Plan starts out by having students describe various July 4th traditions and discuss the history and reasons behind the celebrations. They continue on to match terms related to the history of July 4th with their corresponding descriptions.
Students watch an informative video by WatchMojo which provides a brief history of July 4th and how Americans celebrate Independence Day. Students do listening comprehension activities in which they list topics discussed in the video and provide short answers based on the information in the video.
After watching the video, students discuss new information they learned about the 4th of July and its history or celebrations. They then proceed to do a grammar activity focusing on active and passive voice, discussing and converting sentences between the two voices, and forming sentences using the correct voice.
In this activation, students discuss questions related to their native country’s Independence Day or a similar holiday and compare them with American Independence Day. They then choose a country and research its independence day, presenting facts in both active and passive voice.
