OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL lesson plan on common health problems offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for intermediate B1/B2 students. In this lesson, students will:

WARM-UP ACTIVITY

Students begin by looking at six people with different health problems. They identify what may be wrong with each person and discuss how each problem is being treated.

Next, the class talks about common health issues, personal experiences with them, and situations that might require a visit to the doctor. Students also consider other everyday health problems and how these conditions can affect daily life.

The final warm-up task introduces short statements about symptoms, treatments, and possible causes. Students match each statement to a person from the first activity and decide which type of information each statement gives.

TARGET LANGUAGE STUDY

Students examine three detailed descriptions of health problems and classify information as a symptom, treatment, or possible cause. The examples introduce natural ways to describe issues such as congestion, back pain, coughs, migraines, stiffness, and other common symptoms.

They then complete two pharmacy dialogues with health-related nouns such as terms connected to prescriptions, medication, dosage, side effects, and insurance. The dialogues place the language in practical situations where someone picks up medicine or asks a pharmacist for advice.

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

First, students listen to a conversation about Rose's health problem and complete notes about the condition, its duration, symptoms, possible causes, doctor or pharmacy visits, and treatment.

After that, students work in pairs with two different health-problem cards. One student describes the problem while the other reacts and asks follow-up questions. They then switch roles. The scenarios include joint pain and heartburn, so students must communicate details about symptoms, causes, medical advice, and treatment.

TALKING ABOUT SYMPTOMS, CAUSES & TREATMENTS

Students choose a real or imaginary health problem from the present or past and prepare short notes about its duration, symptoms, possible causes, treatment, and any visits to a doctor or pharmacy.

In pairs, one student describes the problem and answers questions while the other reacts, asks for more information, and keeps the conversation going. Useful prompts help students describe current and past conditions, explain possible causes, and talk about treatments. Where relevant, they can also discuss prescriptions, medication, dosage, side effects, and insurance.
