*This is the third lesson in the lesson series on: Life Changes & The Many Uses of "Get".

OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL lesson plan on get phrasal verbs offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for B1 students. In this lesson, students will:

  • Talk about rewarding and challenging life changes and personal experiences.
  • Learn common phrases and phrasal verbs with "get" used in everyday situations.
  • Analyze examples of get phrasal verbs in context and match them to definitions.
  • Practice using get phrases through guided sentence completion and discussion.
  • Use the target phrases in personalized speaking activities and real-life conversations.

WARM-UP ACTIVITY

Students begin this lesson on phrasal verbs with "get" by looking at several life changes such as starting a new job or school, beginning a relationship, developing a new hobby, or moving to a new place. They choose a few of these situations and discuss questions about what can be rewarding or challenging about these experiences. This helps students connect the lesson topic to real-life situations while activating background knowledge related to change and personal growth.

The next activity introduces Elvin's thoughts about different life changes. Students read each statement and decide whether the situation seems rewarding or challenging. After identifying the type of experience, the class discusses why certain changes can feel positive or difficult. Students can also describe their own experiences related to the situations and share examples from their personal lives.

TARGET LANGUAGE STUDY

Students read a short set of reflections from Elvin that include several phrases and phrasal verbs using "get." Each example shows the phrase used in a natural situation such as finishing something unpleasant, recovering from a fear, or getting along with someone. Students try to define each phrase in their own words by looking carefully at the context and meaning of the sentence.

The next task helps clarify the meaning of the target language. Students match each phrase with a definition that explains its meaning, such as recovering from something difficult, moving from place to place, becoming interested in something, or dealing with a challenging situation.

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

Students first complete a short text about Jerri, a university student thinking about her first semester in a new city. They fill in missing phrases using the correct get phrasal verbs based on the context of each sentence. In this activity, students recognize how these expressions function in natural situations such as managing challenges, getting used to a new place, or dealing with stressful exams.

Next, students read Jerri's description of living with a roommate and summarize her experience using several of the phrases studied earlier. While discussing the text, they identify situations where Jerri "gets along with" her roommate, "gets into" in a new activity, or "gets through" issues with her roommate. Students then reflect on whether they have had similar experiences with roommates or other people they live with.

REAL-LIFE CONVERSATIONS USING "GET" PHRASES

Students apply the target language through personalized speaking activities. In Option A, they think about a challenging or rewarding change or experience in their lives and write a short story or notes describing it. While preparing their ideas, they try to include several of the get phrases from the lesson. After writing, they work with a classmate or the teacher and take turns sharing their stories and experiences.

Another option invites students to choose several talking points related to everyday situations such as hobbies, fears, relationships, and personal habits. Each prompt encourages the use of a specific phrase with "get." Students discuss the questions with a partner and respond to each other's ideas while practicing the target language in a natural and meaningful way.
