OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This free ESL lesson on AI and healthcare provides activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for advanced C1 students. In this lesson, students will:

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

In the first section of this AI healthcare ESL lesson plan, students explore and discuss different uses of artificial intelligence (AI) across a variety of industries, such as education, dating & relationships, and entertainment. After this, they make verb and collocations. Essentially, they try to combine some provided verbs with nouns to form ideas about how artificial intelligence is being used in healthcare. For example, students would combine the verb “eliminate” with “paperwork” to perhaps talk about how AI can help eliminate clinical paperwork in doctor’s offices and hospitals, since everything can be tracked using digital devices and tools these days. In the final part of the preview section, students describe a variety of health technologies in some images. Finally, they discuss a few questions about these technologies and any personal experiences they may have had with them.

VIEWING ACTIVITY

The viewing phase of this lesson is based on a video about the future of healthcare and the impact of artificial intelligence. In the video, a doctor named Eric Topol is interviewed, and he speaks about a wide range of uses, impacts, and benefits of integrating AI into the healthcare industry. In the activities, students answer a question about Dr. Topol. They also match sentences about the current and potential uses of AI in healthcare. To finish up the viewing activity, there is a listening for detail activity. In this activity, students choose the correct word they hear Dr. Topol use in his concluding ideas to finish the video.

DISCUSSION & PHRASES OF REFERENCE

After watching the video, there are some questions that students can discuss focusing on the content of the video and their opinion about it.

In the part after, students read some of the paraphrased ideas from the video. Students are instructed to complete each idea using a provided list of words. Here are some examples:

• In regard to the doctor-patient relationship, AI could eliminate clinical paperwork and data clerk functions.
• In terms of treatments, AI could get rid of hospital rooms and enable more home-based care systems.

Students answer a few questions about these phrases of reference and their usage. Then, students try using a few of these phrases of reference to make sentences about the potential uses of AI in other industries.

AI SPOTLIGHT: INDUSTRY LEADERS SPEAK OUT

In this communicative, task-based activity, students explore AI's impact on various industries. They start by selecting an industry they work in or are interested in. Then they identify three potential applications of AI in this industry, using phrases like "when it comes to," "in regard to," and "with respect to."

After sharing their ideas with a classmate or teacher, they prepare questions about AI in their partner's chosen industry.

The final step involves role-playing: one student acts as an industry leader answering questions about AI's uses and impacts, while the other plays an investigative journalist conducting the interview.
