OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL lesson plan on adverbs of frequency offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for A1 students. In this lesson, students will:

• Talk about how often common routines and free-time activities happen.
• Review familiar activity vocabulary in weekly, monthly, and yearly contexts.
• Learn and use always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, and never.

WARM-UP ACTIVITY

Students begin these Adverbs of Frequency ESL Lesson Activities by looking at six people's activities and visual frequency information. They complete short sentences about habits that happen several times a week, a few times a month, every day, at a normal time, not at all, or once a year. The examples include yoga, video games, brushing teeth, going to the gym, drinking coffee, and skiing.

Part 2 brings the focus to the students' own lives without introducing the frequency adverbs yet. Using a list of familiar activities, students complete statements about things they do every day, most days, every week, every month, every year, or not at all. Activities include walking, watching TV, exercising, cooking, reading, drinking coffee, traveling, playing video games, meeting friends, and going to the park.

TARGET LANGUAGE STUDY

Students first return to the six people from the warm-up and write the correct adverb of frequency for each activity. The examples introduce "always," "usually," "often," "sometimes," "rarely," and "never" through clear real-life frequency patterns.

In the second activity, students read six statements that show how often an action happens and add the best adverb to each related sentence. Examples include activities that happen every morning, most days, several times a week, only a few times a year, or not at all.

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

Students read a table about Kian's life and write eight sentences with adverbs of frequency. The activity mixes everyday routines and free-time activities such as getting up early, visiting cafés, playing with a cat, camping, basketball, going to the beach, reading before bed, and cooking.

Next, students put words in order to build five questions about frequency and habits. The questions include "How often do you...?", questions with "usually" and "sometimes," and a question about something the student rarely does.

MY LIFE: HOW OFTEN DO I...?

Students first write five activities from their own lives and add a frequency word or phrase for each one. They can use adverbs of frequency as well as expressions such as "once or twice a...," "a few times per...," and "every...."

Next, they write three to five questions for a classmate or teacher. The prompts include "How often do you...?" and questions with "usually," "often," or "sometimes," while a vocabulary box provides familiar activity ideas.

Finally, students work with a classmate or teacher. They share several activities from Step 1 and explain how often they do them, then ask their prepared questions and answer their partner's questions.
