OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL lesson plan on hobbies offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for A1 students. In this lesson, students will:

• Talk about common hobbies and free-time activities through simple visual tasks.
• Learn useful vocabulary and verb combinations for hobbies and free time.
• Use "I like to," "I like + -ing," and "I enjoy + -ing" correctly.

WARM-UP ACTIVITY

Students start these ESL Vocabulary and Activities on Hobbies by looking at six people and matching common hobbies to the correct photos. The vocabulary includes hiking, cooking, playing the piano, reading books, doing yoga, and playing tennis.

The second activity expands the vocabulary beyond the first six hobbies. Students match actions such as "spend time with," "play," "watch," "go," and "go to" with people, places, or things to form natural free-time expressions. A bonus task asks them to add three more hobbies or free-time activities of their own.

TARGET LANGUAGE STUDY

Students first choose the correct verb form in three short sentences. The examples introduce "like to + verb," "like + -ing," and "enjoy + -ing" through familiar hobbies such as yoga, tennis, and reading.

Next, students look at three more hobby photos and write sentences about what the people like or enjoy doing. They use the target language from the first activity to describe playing the piano, cooking, and hiking.

The final task focuses on simple follow-up questions. Students complete six questions with "What," "Where," "When," or "Who" and read the full questions and answers about hobbies and free-time activities.

PRODUCTION PRACTICE

Students listen to three short dialogues and complete missing information about each person's free-time activities and additional details. The task includes activities such as basketball, camping, spending time with family, running, skiing, and watching movies.

In the second activity, students choose Student A or Student B. They write sentences about the free-time activities shown in their pictures, then work with a partner to ask and answer questions about those activities. The visual prompts also provide details such as places, times, people, and types of activities.

MY HOBBIES & FREE TIME: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY...?

Option A asks students to write three or four free-time activities they like or enjoy and add a few details about each one. They then work with a classmate or teacher, ask and answer questions, and record their partner's activities and details in a second table.

Option B gives students a shorter personalized task. They write three hobbies with "I enjoy...," "I like to...," and "I like...." After that, they choose one or two activities and discuss simple questions about when, where, who, and what.
