This ESL lesson plan on family introductions offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for A1 beginner students. In this lesson, students will:
Students begin this family introductions ESL lesson by looking at photos of Yana’s family and matching family members to the correct people. They complete simple sentences such as “This is Hanna. She is my…” and “This is Tobi. He is our…”. The activity introduces basic family words, including husband, sister, brother, mom, daughters, dad, son, and dog.
Next, students put family words into groups. They organize words such as husband, daughter, cat, brother, wife, and dad under categories like partners, siblings, parents, children, and pets. This helps students connect single family words to larger family groups.
After that, students read statements about Yana’s family and decide if they are true or false. They check details such as whether Yana has a husband, siblings, children, and a pet.
Students read a short conversation between Maria and Yana about family. They complete the dialogue with questions such as “Do you have family here in Kyiv?”, “How old are your children?”, “Do you have children or pets?”, “Do you have siblings?”, and “How old is she?”. The conversation gives students a clear model for simple family introductions and follow-up questions.
Then, students complete a table with information about Maria and Yana. They write details about partners, children, ages of children, siblings, ages of siblings, and pets. This part helps students understand the conversation and organize family details in a simple way.
Students listen to a conversation and write information about Nolan and Yusuf. They complete a table with details about partners, children, ages of children, siblings, and ages of siblings. This gives students controlled practice with the family introduction questions from the lesson.
After the listening task, students work with a partner and take either Bria or Liam. They use family photos and age numbers to ask and speak about the families. One student describes Bria’s family, and the other describes Liam’s family. The task gives students guided speaking practice with family words, “Do you have…?” questions, and age information.
Students choose Option A or Option B for the final task. In Option A, they first write information about their own family in a table. They include partners, siblings, parents, children, and pets. They can also write how old the family members are.
Next, students work with a classmate or teacher. They ask and speak about their families, then write information about their classmate’s or teacher’s family in a second table. The prompts help students use simple questions such as “Do you have siblings?”, “Do you have parents?”, “Do you have a partner?”, “Do you have children?”, and “Do you have pets?”.
Finally, students describe their partner’s family. They use the information from the table to introduce someone else’s family in simple A1 language.
In Option B, students discuss the same family questions in a shorter speaking task. This option gives teachers a simpler version of the activation for classes that need less writing or extra support.
