ESL Wild Animals Lesson Plan Description

OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This ESL lesson plan on wild animals, elephants and safaris contains activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials for B2 upper intermediate and C1 advanced students. By the end of the lesson, students will understand and be able to use some vocabulary words related to wild animals, wildlife and safaris, as well as be able to tell a detailed description of a wildlife excursion while using linking words and special phrases.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

This lesson on elephants and wildlife starts out by students describing some African wildlife animals and their distinct features. They continue to engage in some discussion questions about wild animals, describe them using some adjectives, as well as do a "fun facts" quiz activity about these animals.

VIDEO & LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Students then proceed to watch a video of an excursionist on a safari adventure with his crew excitedly traveling through a game reserve in Africa. They are in search of one of the largest wild life animals in Africa — the "Big Tusker", the iconic African elephant. Students answer some short questions about the video and their excursion, and then fill in some words they hear the man use during his tale to describe his encounter with the elephants.

DISCUSSION & VOCABULARY

Students discuss some questions about the man’s excursion and a quote Joe makes about wildlife conservation.  They then proceed to do an activity in which they define some vocabulary words and phrases Joe uses in his tale about his encounter with the big tuskers. In the last activity in this section, students identify some linking words and phrases he uses in the same encounter, such as “despite the fact that”, “yet”, “suddenly”, and “as”.

WILD ANIMALS & WILDLIFE EXCURSION ACTIVITY

In this engaging activation, students decide on a type of wildlife excursion they would like to go on from a list of options, in addition to the location. They then can either choose to discuss some questions about that excursion, imagining they were on it, or do a role play conversation in which they describe the excursion in detail during a meeting with a friend. In it, they get the chance to use some of the wild animals vocabulary, phrases, and linking words they learned in the lesson.
