OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

This ESL lesson plan on comparing accommodation offers engaging activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for pre-intermediate A2-B1 students. In this lesson, students will:

  • Discuss accommodation prices, locations, amenities, reviews, and personal preferences.
  • Learn adjectives for describing comfortable, practical, and unsuitable accommodation.
  • Watch two Rome apartment tours and complete listening comprehension activities.
  • Compare accommodation with descriptive and comparative language.
  • Compare two places online or choose between two prepared accommodation options.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

Students examine a short-term accommodation listing in Rome and describe its price, location, amenities, photos, and guest review. They discuss what they like and dislike about the property and decide whether they would stay there.

A vocabulary activity introduces opposite descriptions for accommodation, including bright and dark, clean and dirty, quiet and noisy, spacious and cramped, reasonably priced and expensive, convenient and inconvenient, and comfy and uncomfortable. Students then use some of the words to describe the Rome listing.

VIEWING ACTIVITY

Two short videos take students inside very different Airbnb apartments in Rome. One features a bright, spacious loft with a private terrace, while the other presents a cozy apartment near several major attractions.

Before watching, the class discusses what matters most when choosing a place to stay.

For the first video, students choose whether statements are true or false and correct the false information. The questions focus on the loft's size, brightness, bedroom, terrace, and location.

In the second viewing task, students complete key details about the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, host recommendations, and nearby attractions.

VIEWING FOLLOW-UP

Students compare the two Rome accommodations and discuss which one appears brighter, more spacious, more convenient, and better equipped. They then imagine both places cost the same and explain which one they would rather book.

Next, students read a dialogue between two friends who are comparing an apartment and a loft in Tulum. They identify the pros and cons of each place, including the location, price, views, bedrooms, check-in arrangements, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, sheets, and shower. After organizing the information, they decide which accommodation they would prefer.

WHICH PLACE SHOULD WE BOOK? COMPARE & CHOOSE!

In Option A, students plan a short vacation, choose a destination, dates, and price range, and visit an accommodation booking site. They compare two suitable places, decide which one they prefer, and use prompts to discuss the rooms, reviews, advantages, and disadvantages.

Option B provides two ready-made accommodations in Whistler, British Columbia. Students compare their prices, locations, styles, amenities, reviews, and possible problems before choosing one. They finish by explaining their decision and identifying the main disadvantage of the place they selected.
